I did some hand-stitching of another coffee cup for last night’s Friday Night Sew In, and I made it into a little mug rug for a colleague that is returning to work on Monday after maternity leave. She & I visit a local Starbucks just a little too often!
I looked at a few hundred Mug Rugs on Flickr last night to come up with a plan. There are some fantastic looking rugs out there! I pinned just a few of my favorites.
It came together really quickly. I think I’ll deliver it to her desk tomorrow so it’s there before she returns on Monday.
(Don’t look too closely…I used 2″ binding and I should have used 2.25 or 2.5 because I was constantly fighting it, and not always winning.)
This is the first time that I’ve actually quilted anything on my machine. I think I did pretty good for my first time.
And Then…
This morning I took The Blue One to the LQS and he made his very own pillowcase – Tootsie Roll method. It was his first time ever using a sewing machine. I think he did a pretty good job!
Sewing
Pulling it out of the roll
Showing it off
I think we had a very successful FNSI and Saturday morning at the LQS! Until next time…
I love, love, love how your mug rug turned out, too cute!
Thanks Marci! She loved it!
Super cute mug rug!!! And how wonderful to spread the love of sewing to another generation 🙂 Your son should be very proud of his pillowcase!
Thanks! He was bored in the class, but he told the neighbor all about his pillowcase, so I know he’s proud of it!
such a great FNSI for you… super cute and easy to make quickly. I find that 2¼inhc binding with ¼ seam is just right for me, good luck getting what is right for you, it is tricky sometimes…
Thanks for stopping by!
I think I would have been fine with 2.25 binding and a normal 1/4 seam allowance, but I went scant and ended up with lots of play. It was almost as much work as when I shorted myself on the first one and had to fight it to get enough binding to cover. Oh well! Always learning…

The mug rug is super cute and so is your little man sewing away so carefully! I love getting my kiddos involved in all the crafty fun. Great FNSI!
Thanks Jennifer! I think that’s the last sewing he’ll be doing for a while though!
