Retreat Recap – Change of Plans

Ahhhhh….retreat weekend.  Plenty of sewing, lots of laughs, and some wine thrown in for good measure.  I did such a good job of selecting 3 projects and pre-cutting so all I’d have to do was sew.  I also planned to work on the Vice Versa BOM blocks for February, but I couldn’t pre-cut for that because I received the instructions the morning of the retreat when I was already on the road.

First things I did were the BOM blocks.  They took me a few hours because I was doing more talking than sewing at times, but I did manage to get them finished first thing.  I’m rather proud of these little blocks.

That’s one ‘To-Do’ checked off the list,  and that’s where ‘checking-things-off-the-to-do-list’ ended.   That’s because I decided to do the Mystery Quilt along with 5 of the 10 ladies in our group.  It was the first time I’ve done a Mystery Quilt and I’m happy with how it turned out.  The quilt could have been laid out two different ways, so I took an unscientific poll amongst the ladies in my group to figure out which way to assemble it. Here are the two options:

Here’s the layout that won:

It was kind of cool to do a quilt like this in a weekend.  I’m still going to add two borders – a skinny (1″) white one, then a big green/floral outer border (6″).

What was cool about this Mystery Quilt is that the LQS brought a bunch of different options, and each of us did a different one:

On the way home I dropped my machine off at the LQS for a little spa retreat of its own.  I’m traveling next week for work, so I figured it was a great time to drop her off for a rejuvenation.

Speaking of traveling next week, I’d better get started packing!  I leave in just over 12 hours and I haven’t yet started to pack.

About msminnesota

I'm a wife, mom of two (one blue, one pink), and I work full time. Our family loves to camp, and we're often on mini adventures during the summer. My fall/winter/spring/rainy day hobby is quilting. I started about 10 years ago, then put everything away when The Blue One was born. A few years ago a good friend decided to take up this 'hobby' and I've been back at it ever since. She's my partner in crime (A.K.A. 'the enabler'). I have no aspirations of becoming a quilt designer - I'm just not that good at geometry (I rely on my math major/computer programmer husband to help with piecing backs at times!). This little blog is my way of chronicling my quilting adventures. Occasionally I post about non-quilting things as well. Thanks for stopping by. Don't forget to say HI! IG: wannabequilter

oooh! I’m in that BOM as well. I’m a little slow at getting my HTS started (I’ve been sick), but I should get it done before the end of the week. May I ask why you changed the pattern?

Oh shoot! I didn’t notice it before! See what happens when I talk and sew? Guess I’ll be taking that one apart when I get back from my trip! Dang! Thank you for telling me – I would have been blissfully unaware!

Oh no! I’m sorry! I thought you had just decided to switch it up… there are 2 of you on the Flickr group (the first 2 to post pictures) that have made that same dark center so I thought it was just a thing. :-S Now I feel bad… especially after you said you were so proud.

Don’t feel bad! I’m still proud – I don’t ‘do’ triangles, so this is good practice. I’m going to fix it because I want it to be done ‘right’. And maybe at the end after I have them all done I’ll re-make them with the solid in the center! 🙂

Precutting projects for a retreat is a really great idea. More sewing and completing projects! Beautiful projects!
