Glamp Stitchalot Project Bag

I’m excited to be heading to Michigan for the first Glamp Stitchalot next month.  In exactly a month, holy cow!!  I signed up for the swap, my first ever, and I’m glad I did.  It’s for a project bag, and I tried a new pattern and I’m very happy with how it turned out!

It’s a blind swap so I don’t want to list the likes and dislikes of my partner because I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but here’s the outside of the bag and the handles…

And I managed to finish the bag tonight.  I didn’t plan on it, but I just started to work on it, and kept on going, and it really didn’t take very long (I had the outside of the bag completed previously, just had to make the handles and put the lining together, then sew it all up).

I used the Improv Tote Tutorial from Vanessa at The Crafty Gemini that she did with Jenny from Missouri Quilt Co.  It’s a two-part tutorial, and tutorial #1 has 240,000 views – I was probably 12+ of those views!  I think people gave up before getting to tutorial #2, it only has 150,000 views!

I don’t have a lot of experience making totes/bags, but this one wasn’t hard. Everything came together really well for me. The only problem I had was that the In R Form fusible foam stabilizer that I used really wasn’t fusible at all.  Despite many attempts, it just wasn’t fusing to my fabric.  Gretchen to the rescue – she reminded me of our long time friend, Elmer’s Glue.  Vanessa and Jenny were falling all over themselves about the In R Form, so I had high hopes.  I wonder if I just got a bad piece?  Anyway, I’ll give it another shot in the future.

After several weeks of absolutely NO Sewing, I managed to finish 3 quilts, and work my way through my WIP to finish it up.  Not a bad week!

The Week of Three Finishes

I finished two quilts in 2014.  Just two.  It was a sad state of affairs, I must say.

But this week I finished THREE.  Yes, three in one week.  Take that, 2014!

They are finishes 5, 6 & 7 for 2015.  That’s a pretty damn good year in my book!

Finish #5: Wishes

Finish #6: Blast Off Baby Quilt

Finish #7:  Triple Barn Star Quilt

I had to quickly take these outside as we were running out of daylight. My hubby is pretty great to be my quilt-model.  🙂

I’d say that was a pretty good week!

Mom, you have a package!

A couple of fabric deliveries this week – one I ordered in May (Sweetwater Varsity quilt kits for The Blue One and The Pink One):

The second delivery of the week was the backings for the above kits (they’re the bottom fabrics above), as well as backing and binding for Holly’s Tree Farm:

And binding for Feed Company:

It was a very Sweetwater week here at our house!  Hi, my name is Julie, and I’m addicted to Sweetwater fabric!

Today was a busy and ridiculously productive day – I quilted 3 (THREE!) quilts during my trip to the longarm – Wishes, Astronaut Baby quilt, and the Triple Barn Star.  Stay tuned for details and photos!

Happy Sunday Stash Day!

Backing, Binding, and Stashing, Oh My!

This weekend was only the second weekend all summer that I was home all weekend, and I sure did put my time to good use.

First up – borders onto the Wishes quilt top, and then piecing the backing together. This afternoon I pinned the zippers for the long arm leaders on, and at some point this week I’ll baste them on so I’m all ready to go for my long arm appointment next Sunday.

Second project – piece the back for the baby boy quilt top I’ve had done for about 4 months.  This one is also going on the long arm on Sunday – it’s just easier for me to do a second one while I’m already there.

Glow in the dark astronauts for the back. The stripes are the binding (of course!)

Third – I pieced the backing for my Triple Barn Star quilt. This top has been finished since about April or so, but I knew it would be a while before I could get to the long arm, so no rush piecing the back.  I’m not planning to take this one to the long arm, but I had some ‘free’ time so decided to just get the back put together.  I would really like to custom quilt this one – not an all over design, and I want to echo the stars.  Something I’ve never done before, so the top will go to the long arm shop with me and I’ll consult with Lucy to see what she thinks I should (and can) do.  You’ll be seeing this one again, hopefully soon!

Lastly, the bindings for each.  I sent this pic to my friend Gretchen and captioned it ‘A quilter’s snowman’.  Yes, I’m a dork, I know it!

While I was working on my projects, the Mister was working on a project of his own…

Tonight:

We’ll be buying a piece of furniture – an accent chair or a small love seat for that large open space.  I am so excited with how it all turned out!  The curtains will go up tonight so we can sleep in there, and the new family photo and wall art I bought last week will go up once we have that final piece of furniture in the room.

Of course I had to sneak in there and lay out the back for the Wishes quilt so I could pin the zippers on before we moved the furniture back in.

And finally – the stashing I did this week – more red, white, and blue for some projects I’ve been saving up for.  I think I now have enough to actually start on the projects.

Wishing My Friday Away

Last night I was able to get the horizontal sashing sewn on, and tonight I pieced all of my rows together.  Feels so good!

While I was working on that, hubby was in the master bedroom prepping for his big job tomorrow:

The hardwood goes in tomorrow!  So exciting!  Lots of projects happening at our house this weekend!

With any luck I’ll have the back to the quilt pieced, and he’ll have the bedroom finished on Sunday.  Fingers crossed!

It’s been FOREVER since I’ve been able to do this – linking to:

W(ishes) In Progress

I made a decent amount of progress on my Wishes quilt tonight – all of the blocks are now sewn into rows. Next step, the sashing. I’m hoping to get it done tomorrow night, and maybe borders on Friday night. I’ve got to get the back pieced rather quickly once the top is done – I’ve got a date with the long arm on Sunday the 20th, and that’s coming up rather quickly!  There will be no time to work on it during the evenings next week because of work.  Darn work – gets in the way of this quilting stuff!

Tonight’s progress, with late-night lighting:

Here’s to hoping I can get it all finished over the next few days!

The Drought’s Over

It had been a few months since I last bought fabric, but that dry spell is clearly over. I ordered backing fabrics for a couple of current projects:

A colleague and her family had a fabric sale this weekend.  Her mother passed away at the end of last year and she had a GIANT stash. They had a 3-day sale and they could very well have another one…and another one.  The Pink One and I went toward the end of the sale today and I picked up these.  The red skulls are going to my neighbor Polly – she’ll make something awesome out of them!  There are 2 white prints I’m going to use in a few little projects that I’ve been stashing for.

Untitled

Pink and purple – not a fantastic photo of the colors, but The Pink One wanted them for a ‘blanket for my babies’.

Last Sunday I posted a block I made for my next project. I needed an off-white for the sashing and borders, which I didn’t have and neither of my LQS had the solid I was looking for. Hubby was at his mom’s house last week in the middle of Wisconsin, and the shop near her house had what I needed so he picked it up and brought it home for me yesterday.  I’m hoping to finish the top this week.  Is it just me, or does it always seem like adding sashing takes FOREVER?

Linking up for my second week in a row to Molli.  This might be a trend!

Project Progress

At last I’ve finally made some progress on one project I’ve had in the works for a while – I started my own Hazel Hedgehog for my office over a month ago and I was finally able to finish her today.  I finished the top about 6 weeks ago, but I’ve been gone or busy every single weekend since then up until this weekend, so I was finally able to make the back, quilt, and bind her this weekend.  For some reason I really struggled with the binding, but after some re-working, I finally got her finished.  Nowhere near perfect (she’s not being judged at the fair, after all), but I’m OK with that.

Here she is, in all her glory…
Untitled

I just gotta say…I LOVE her glasses.  I wonder why…
Untitled

I’m so glad she’s finally done!!

Because it’s been so long since I’ve sewn, it’s also been a long time since I bought any fabric, but that streak ended this weekend.  I need to make a project tote for my swap partner for Glamp Stitchalot in November, and I finally found something I *hope* my partner will love, based on the information I know about her…   Untitled I finally found a tote pattern I like (I’m skeered of them, to be honest!) – it was a tutorial from Jenny Doan of Missouri Quilt Company and Crafty Gemini and I’m pretty sure I can make it!  I ordered the In-R-Form stabilizer and thanks to Amazon Prime, it will be here tomorrow (WooHoo!).

I’m excited to start this bag, and I’m pretty sure that’s the first time I’ve ever said that!   In other news – I decided I should start a new quilt with a very hard deadline in about 8 weeks.  Can’t say a whole lot about it, but I can give you a peek of the tester block I made today. The blocks will be no problem to whip up. I’ve already pressed all 36 fat quarters, just need to find an off-white solid for the sashing.  Too bad pure white won’t work – I have about 15 yards of that in my stash!    Untitled

More on this (I hope) in the coming weeks!

It’s been fo-eva-eva since I’ve done this, but I’m linking to

Sunday Stash & More

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Sunday Stash post, or any post for that matter!  I’ve been slowly accumulating new fabric for my giant Hazel Hedgehog wallhanging and I finally have exactly what I need…

Untitled

I decided to take a pic of The Pink One (fresh out of the shower) in front of this mega Hazel to give my non-quilty friends an idea of the size of it. Just a picture of it doesn’t do it justice!

Untitled

The fabrics I added to my stash for this: Paradiso – Kate Spain, Kona Regatta (body), Kona Cloud (face). The grey and black were in my stash already.  I was so busy that I forgot to take pics of it before I started cutting. Hubby and I went on a little road trip for our anniversary a few weeks ago and along the way we stopped at a few quilt shops in Minnesota.  We stopped at Country Fabrics and Quilting, Mother Originals Quilt Shop, Colorz Quilt Shop/Cherrywood Fabrics, and the obligatory stop at Millie P’s on the way home.  My hubby is so great – I pulled out my phone while we were in Millie P’s and showed him a picture of fabric I was looking for (Paradiso) and he found it in under 5 minutes!

Hazel isn’t quite finished yet – she still needs her glasses, which I’m not looking forward to adding. Applique is not a strength of mine, and I find that it takes me a while to do it, but she won’t be complete without it!

This summer has been so busy – it’s out of control!  We decided to cancel our plans this weekend which allowed me the time to piece this entire Hazel and I’m so glad I was able to do it! I’m looking forward to finishing her up and hanging her in my office.

Linking to Molli today!

Queen Bee

I’ve been in the Promises Circle at do.Good Stitches for a year, and I’m the leader for the month of July. Our group takes June ‘off’, so I posted the July block I’m planning on early.  I chose something simple and quick because summer is crazy at our house and I’m guessing it’s the same with the other ladies as well.
